certare (sɜr 'tɑr eɪ) Latin v. “to strive”

We help students strive to achieve their goals.

Certare Tutoring has a simple, but surprisingly rare, ethos: embrace individualized learning.

When other tutoring services talk about “personalized tutoring” they tend to mean “organized tutoring.” Tutoring centers group students with similar scores together because they assume that these students have identical academic needs. In this environment, the needs of the class often eclipse the needs of the individual student.

We believe that personalized tutoring should be just that: personal. All our services are one-to-one virtual calls via Zoom. We truly tailor our lessons to each student’s needs, while emphasizing progress based on the individual goals of each student.

Whether a student wants to work towards having the highest possible score or is only looking for slight improvement, we do everything in our power to help students achieve their version of success without compromising their mental or emotional well-being.

Jessica Gonzalez-Wu has a B.A. in English from Columbia University with focuses in 15th-16th Century English Literature and Ethnic American Literature. She founded Certare Tutoring so she could offer the type of tutoring she wished she had as a child: tutoring that prioritizes mental health and works to preserve individual personalities. When she is not tutoring, she likes playing video games and testing new baking recipes.
